Memory

Memory types and capacity:
  • SDRAM - synchronous dram - shares clock signal with system bus clock (FSB and CPU)
  • DDR - up to 512 MB (old) - doubles clock speed.
  • DDR2 - up 1 GB new - doubles the clock speed, splits pulse in two,  4x throughput as SDR
  • DDR3 - up to 2 GB, newer for desktops, 2x faster than DDR2
Memory slots on motherboard:
  • DIMM - 64bit module memory for SDR, DDR, DDR2 DDR3
  • RIMM - 16/32bit module DRDRAM
  • SODIMM - laptops. 32/64bit module SDR, SDRAM, DDR/DDR2/DDR3
  • MicroDIMM - netbooks, 64bit module
